Word Crimes: PUNISHMENT

Some people are lovers of great art.

Some enjoy transcendent music.

Some people relish the rivalry and prowess displayed in athletic events.

I adore WORDS.

This is not to say that I am a master of them myself, quite the contrary.  I find myself lacking in everything I write.  But that does not mean that I don't find a great sense of satisfaction in the written word.  I love it when exactly the RIGHT word is used to convey a feeling.  I love it when it hits you in just the right place and it rings true inside you.  I am a lover of words.

That being said, I find it very disturbing when a word is misused.  It offends my sense of goodness and justice when a perfectly good word is twisted to mean something it does not, often to cover up its real agenda.  Personally, I think word abusers should be flogged.

Lawyers in general,  and politicians specifically, are the worst offenders. I intend to bring their crimes to light so that they can receive the shame they deserve.  Here's the latest word crime that has gotten under my skin.

Now Obama says that if his girls decide to get tattoos that this would be the punishment:

"mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo in the same place. And we’ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo.”

He keeps using that word. I don't think it means what he thinks it means.

    1. That is a very poignant way to put that, Rodney. I wish the President would see it that way.

  2. Mark Twain once noted that the difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.

    1. Wow is that true. The right word just FITS. The almost right word wobbles around and feels awkward.

Now I'll remember that every time I see a lightning bug this summer. :) (or a flash of lightning)
